    Stress Fractures

    Stress fractures can take place in any part of the body including the feet. When this occurs what it means is that there is a partial crack in one of the bones in your feet. There are several bones that the feet are comprised of. The purpose of the bones is to give structure to the feet and they help to hold the muscles in place.

    Sometimes the muscles end up getting stretched beyond what they should as a result of some type of activity. Or too much pressure is put on one of the bones. If this continues eventually damage will happen which can lead to a stress fracture.

    Athletes who are involved in running for example, can sometimes end up with a stress fracture because the feet are constantly being exposed to this weight bearing activity. Dancing is another activity that can bring on this condition as well. Then there are times where an individual can end up landing on a hard surface with their feet the wrong way and the impact creates a stress factor.

    Persistent pain

    At first the individual may not suffer too much discomfort but the pain may increase when being active. It often becomes localised in the area of the fracture. For some, when they take the pressure off the injured area, the pain decreases. While with others no matter what they do, the pain persists. The pain may go outside of the area of injury to other areas of the foot that were not hurt in the first place. If the fracture is severe some individuals cannot even stand on their injured foot and they may experience pain even when resting.

    In order to properly diagnose a stress fracture of the foot it will need to be X-rayed or may require an MRI or CT scan.


    The normal course of treatment for a foot stress fracture may be a series of physiotherapy treatments. This will take a period of time and can take anywhere from 3 to 9 months, but in some cases it can take up to a year before the foot is fully healed.

    Stress fractures of the feet should be dealt with immediately by a professional. The cause of the problem should be identified and a course of treatment planned immediately. An individual that suffers this type of injury should seek out a Podiatrist who can make arrangements for the necessary treatments which may include physiotherapy.

    On rare occasions if the fracture is not healing properly then surgery may have to be performed. However, this is very rare.

    As part of the physiotherapy treatment exercises may be recommended. There are many different forms of treatment that the physiotherapist may want to use such as immobilising the joint and electric therapy, just to give a few examples.

    It isn’t always direct impact as a result of a sports injury that can create a stress fracture as there are many other types of causes. It can be as a result of muscle weakness, being overweight, improper diet, or problems such as flat feet or high arches, just to name a few.
